About Azee 100 mg DT
Azee 100 mg DT is a prescription dispersible tablet containing 100 mg of azithromycin, made by Cipla Limited, used to treat bacterial infections in children, such as ear, throat, sinus, chest and skin infections. The letters DT mean the tablet breaks up in a little water to form a drink, which many children find easier than swallowing a tablet. Because doses for children are calculated from body weight, a small 100 mg unit makes it simpler to give the right amount.
How does Azee work?
Azithromycin belongs to the macrolide family of antibiotics. It locks onto the ribosome inside a bacterium, the machinery that builds proteins, so the germ can no longer grow or multiply and the body’s defenses can clear it. The drug concentrates in infected tissue and leaves the body slowly, which is why a course lasting only three or five days keeps acting for several days afterwards. It does nothing against viruses, so it is not given for colds, flu or most coughs.
What is it used for?
- Middle ear infections and sinusitis.
- Strep throat or tonsillitis, mainly in children who cannot take penicillin.
- Pneumonia caught in the community and other chest infections, including whooping cough.
- Uncomplicated skin infections caused by bacteria that azithromycin can kill.
How to give Azee 100 mg DT
- Give one dose a day at roughly the same time; it can be taken with or without food.
- Drop the tablet into a few teaspoons of water, stir until it has broken up, and have the child drink it at once. Swirl a little more water round the cup and give that too, so none is left behind.
- Children who manage tablets can swallow it whole with a drink instead.
- Typical schedules are 10 mg/kg once daily for three days, or 10 mg/kg on day one followed by 5 mg/kg on days two to five; throat infections may be treated with 12 mg/kg daily for five days. Children over 45 kg normally take adult doses. The prescriber chooses the plan.
- If a dose is forgotten, give it when you remember, unless the next one is nearly due; never give two doses together.
How long does it take to work?
Most children start to perk up, with less fever and pain, within two to three days. Keep going until every dose has been given, even if they look well sooner. Call the doctor if there is no improvement after three days, or at any point if the child becomes drowsy, breathless or unable to drink.
What are the side effects?
The most frequent are loose stools, tummy pain, feeling sick and vomiting. Headache, rash and an odd taste also occur. Get urgent medical help for swelling of the face, lips or throat, noisy or difficult breathing, a blistering or peeling rash, yellow skin or eyes, fainting, a fast irregular heartbeat, or severe watery or bloody diarrhea, which can appear even weeks after the course has ended.
Who should not take it?
Do not give it to a child who is allergic to azithromycin or any other macrolide, such as erythromycin or clarithromycin, or who developed jaundice or liver trouble after azithromycin in the past. Tell the doctor about liver or kidney disease, heart rhythm problems such as long QT syndrome, low potassium or magnesium, and myasthenia gravis. List every other medicine the child takes, particularly those that affect heart rhythm, plus digoxin, ciclosporin and warfarin. In babies under six weeks old, macrolides have been linked with a narrowing of the stomach outlet (pyloric stenosis), so report forceful vomiting or irritability with feeds.

Can adults take Azee 100 mg DT?

Is there another 100 mg dispersible brand?
Yes, Azithromycin 100 mg DT from Healing Pharma has the same strength. Do not switch brands mid-course without asking.
