Men's Health Treatments: An Overview

Sexual health problems are among the most common reasons men see a doctor, yet many wait years before asking for help. The two conditions at the heart of this range, erectile dysfunction (ED) and premature ejaculation (PE), both respond well to treatment, and effective generic medicines are widely available. This overview explains the options and how they differ, to help you have a better-informed conversation with your doctor or pharmacist. Follow the links for detail on any single medicine.

Conditions Covered in This Range

Erectile dysfunction

ED is a persistent difficulty getting or keeping an erection firm enough for satisfying sex. It becomes more common with age and is closely tied to blood vessel health, diabetes, hormones, stress and some medicines. Our erectile dysfunction page covers causes, tests and treatments.

Premature ejaculation

PE means ejaculating sooner than you or your partner would like, typically within about one to three minutes of penetration, with little sense of control and noticeable distress. Behavioral techniques, numbing sprays and a short-acting medicine called dapoxetine can all help.

When ED and PE overlap

The two often occur together. Fear of losing an erection can make men rush, and worry about finishing early can make erections less reliable. Treating the ED first sometimes improves control too.

Prostate symptoms

Benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) is a non-cancerous enlargement of the prostate that causes a weak stream, hesitancy and frequent trips to the toilet at night. It shares risk factors with ED, and the two are often seen together in men over 50. Low-dose daily tadalafil is licensed for both. New urinary symptoms should always be assessed by a doctor in their own right.

How ED Tablets Work

Every ED tablet in this range belongs to the same drug class: phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors. They support the body's natural response to arousal by keeping the blood vessels of the penis relaxed for longer, so more blood flows in and stays there. They will not trigger an erection without sexual stimulation, and they do not increase desire.

Because they share one mechanism, these medicines have broadly similar success rates. What sets them apart is how fast they start, how long they last, whether food gets in the way, and small differences in side effects.

Comparing the PDE5 Inhibitors

MedicineTypical onsetWindow of effectEffect of foodUsual dose (labeled maximum)
Sildenafil30–60 minutesAbout 4–6 hoursA heavy, fatty meal can delay it50 mg (max 100 mg once a day)
Tadalafil30 minutes to 2 hoursUp to 36 hoursNot significantly affected10 mg as needed (max 20 mg a day), or 2.5–5 mg once daily
Vardenafil25–60 minutesAbout 4–5 hoursA high-fat meal can delay it10 mg (max 20 mg once a day)
Avanafil15–30 minutesAround 6 hoursA heavy, fatty meal can delay it100 mg (max 200 mg once a day)
Udenafil30–90 minutesIntermediate, longer than sildenafil but shorter than tadalafilLess well studied100 mg; licensed in some countries only

Onset times are averages, and many men need a little longer on the first few occasions. The window of effect is the period in which the medicine can help you respond to arousal, not how long an erection lasts.

Choosing Between Them

There is no single best ED tablet for everyone. The right choice depends on your routine, your health and your preferences:

  • Planned occasions: sildenafil and vardenafil are well-established, short-acting options that leave the body within the same day.
  • More spontaneity: tadalafil's long window, or its low daily dose, removes the need to time a tablet around sex.
  • Quick start: avanafil is among the fastest to begin working.
  • Mealtimes: if you tend to take a tablet around dinner, tadalafil is least affected by food. The others work best on a light meal or an empty stomach.
  • Side effects: if one medicine causes troublesome headaches, flushing, tinted vision or back pain, a doctor may suggest trying another.
  • Other health conditions: heart disease, heart rhythm problems, liver or kidney disease and interacting medicines can rule out some options or call for a lower dose.

Treating Premature Ejaculation

Dapoxetine is a short-acting SSRI developed specifically for PE. It is taken one to three hours before sex rather than every day. It suits some men well, but it can cause dizziness and occasionally fainting, and it isn't suitable for men with certain heart problems or those taking antidepressants. Non-drug approaches such as the stop-start technique, pelvic floor exercises and counseling help many men and can be used alongside medication.

Combination tablets

Several products combine a PDE5 inhibitor with dapoxetine in a single tablet, aimed at men who have both ED and PE. They carry both sets of side effects, including a higher chance of dizziness and low blood pressure. Use one only if a doctor has confirmed that you have both conditions.

Safety Rules for Every ED Tablet

  • Never combine a PDE5 inhibitor with nitrates (such as GTN spray or isosorbide tablets), recreational "poppers" or riociguat. The combination can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
  • Use one PDE5 inhibitor at a time, with no more than one dose in 24 hours. Don't take two different ED medicines together.
  • Stay within labeled strengths. Tablets stronger than the licensed maximum offer little extra benefit for most men and raise the risk of side effects. If a standard dose isn't working, see a doctor.
  • Consider your heart. Sex is physical exertion. Men with heart disease, a recent heart attack or stroke, or uncontrolled blood pressure need a medical review first.
  • Mention alpha-blockers such as tamsulosin or doxazosin, often prescribed for prostate symptoms, as they add to the blood-pressure-lowering effect.
  • Get urgent help for an erection lasting more than four hours, sudden loss of vision or hearing, or chest pain.

Generic or Branded?

Generic versions contain the same active ingredients as the original brands (Viagra, Cialis, Levitra, Spedra and Priligy) and work in the same way. Many products in this range come from established Indian manufacturers such as Cipla, Ajanta Pharma, Centurion Laboratories, Fortune Healthcare and Sunrise Remedies. Whatever the brand, these are prescription medicines, so ask a doctor to confirm they are right for you.

Frequently Asked Questions

Which ED medicine is the most effective?

Taken correctly at a suitable dose, sildenafil, tadalafil, vardenafil and avanafil all help most men, with similar success rates in studies. Individual responses vary, so the best choice is usually the one that fits your routine and gives you the fewest side effects.

Can I switch from one ED tablet to another?

Yes, with medical advice. Many men try more than one before finding the right fit. Never take two different PDE5 inhibitors on the same day, and ask your pharmacist how long to wait after tadalafil, which stays in the body much longer than the others.

Do ED tablets help with premature ejaculation?

PDE5 inhibitors are not licensed for PE on its own. In men who have both conditions, however, treating the ED can ease anxiety and improve control. Dapoxetine is the medicine designed specifically for PE.

Do I need a prescription?

In most countries these are prescription-only medicines. In the UK, one 50 mg sildenafil product can be supplied by a pharmacist after a consultation, but the same safety checks still apply. Always make sure a healthcare professional has confirmed that treatment is suitable for you.
