Udenafil: A Less Familiar ED Option
Sexual wellness covers far more than medicines, but for many men with erectile dysfunction (ED) a tablet is an important part of the picture. This category currently features udenafil, a PDE5 inhibitor developed in South Korea by Dong-A Pharmaceutical and launched there in 2005 under the brand name Zydena. It is also approved in Russia and a number of other countries. However, it is not licensed in the UK, the European Union or the United States, so doctors in those regions are generally less familiar with it. Zudena is a generic version made in India.
How Udenafil Works
Udenafil works in the same way as sildenafil and tadalafil. It blocks the PDE5 enzyme so that blood vessels in the penis stay relaxed for longer during arousal, making an erection easier to achieve and keep. Arousal is still required, and desire is unaffected. Its effect is usually described as lasting longer than sildenafil but not as long as tadalafil.
How It Is Taken
- Where it is licensed, the usual dose is 100 mg, taken as needed around 30 minutes to an hour before sexual activity. It is available here as Zudena 100 mg.
- Take no more than one dose in 24 hours, and don't combine it with any other ED medicine.
- Any change in dose should be decided by a doctor.
Safety
The same safety rules apply as for every PDE5 inhibitor:
- Never take it with nitrates (such as GTN spray), recreational "poppers" or riociguat, as this can cause a dangerous fall in blood pressure.
- Get medical advice first if you have heart disease, very low or uncontrolled blood pressure, liver or kidney problems, or a history of stroke or sudden vision loss.
- Tell your doctor about alpha-blockers and medicines such as ketoconazole, itraconazole or ritonavir, which can raise udenafil levels.
- Common side effects include flushing, headache, a blocked nose and indigestion. Seek urgent help for an erection lasting more than 4 hours, chest pain, or sudden changes in vision or hearing.
Other Options
Because udenafil has been studied less widely than other ED tablets, many doctors will suggest a more established medicine first. Compare the alternatives in our sildenafil and tadalafil ranges, or read about causes and treatments on our erectile dysfunction page.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is udenafil the same as sildenafil?
No. It is a different medicine from the same drug class. It works in a similar way but has its own dosing and duration of effect.
Can I switch to udenafil from another ED tablet?
Only with medical advice. Never take it on the same day as another PDE5 inhibitor.
The information here is general guidance and cannot stand in for a consultation with a doctor or pharmacist. Udenafil is a prescription medicine that is not licensed in every country. Seek professional advice to make sure it is suitable and legal for you to use.
