Description
Same active ingredient (azithromycin) as Zithromax®, the US brand. Azeetop 1000 mg is an Indian brand, made and licensed in India.
About Azeetop 1000 mg
Azeetop 1000 mg is a prescription tablet containing 1000 mg (1 g) of azithromycin, made by Healing Pharma in India, used as a single-dose antibiotic for infections such as genital chlamydia, non-gonococcal urethritis and chancroid. One tablet delivers a complete treatment dose for these conditions, so there is no course of tablets to remember.
How does Azeetop work?
The active ingredient is a macrolide that blocks protein assembly inside bacteria, halting their growth. What makes a one-tablet treatment possible is its unusually long stay in the body: tissue levels fall by only half about every three days, so a single gram keeps working for roughly a week.
When is a single 1 g dose used?
| Infection | Typical azithromycin regimen |
|---|---|
| Non-gonococcal urethritis or cervicitis | 1 g once |
| Chancroid | 1 g once |
| Genital chlamydia when doxycycline cannot be used, including pregnancy | 1 g once (US guidance), or 1 g then 500 mg daily for two days (UK guidance) |
| Trachoma | 20 mg/kg once, maximum 1 g |
Doxycycline is now the first choice for chlamydia outside pregnancy, and gonorrhoea needs ceftriaxone rather than azithromycin alone. Your clinic will decide which regimen fits your test results.
How to take Azeetop 1000 mg
Take the tablet whole with a full glass of water. It can be taken with or without food, though eating something light first helps some people who feel queasy with large doses. Stay seated for a while if you feel dizzy. If you are sick within a short time of swallowing it, ask your clinic whether to repeat the dose rather than guessing. Keep antacids for a few hours later.
What to expect afterwards
- Urethral discharge or burning often eases within a few days and should be gone within about a week.
- Stay abstinent for seven days after the dose and until partners have completed their own treatment.
- Tell recent partners so they can be tested; clinics can do this anonymously.
- Go back if symptoms persist, as another cause or a resistant infection may be involved.
What are the side effects?
Stomach upset is the main problem: diarrhea, nausea, abdominal pain and sometimes vomiting, usually lasting a day or so. Headache, dizziness and a metallic taste are also reported. Stop and get emergency help for facial swelling, difficulty breathing or a widespread rash; call a doctor promptly for palpitations, blackouts, yellow eyes, or diarrhea that is severe, watery or bloody.
Who should not take Azeetop?
- Anyone allergic to azithromycin or other macrolide antibiotics.
- People with long QT syndrome, a history of dangerous heart rhythms or uncorrected low potassium or magnesium, unless a doctor has judged it safe.
- People with severe liver disease, or who became jaundiced with azithromycin before.
- Those taking ergot medicines for migraine.
Also mention myasthenia gravis and medicines such as warfarin, digoxin, colchicine, ciclosporin and drugs that lengthen the QT interval. In pregnancy it is one of the accepted options for chlamydia, and it passes into breast milk in small amounts.
