Description

Same active ingredient (azithromycin) as Zithromax®, the US brand. Azithromycin 100 mg DT is an Indian brand, made and licensed in India.

About Azithromycin 100 mg DT

Azithromycin 100 mg DT is a prescription dispersible tablet containing 100 mg of azithromycin, made by Healing Pharma in India, used to treat bacterial infections in children, including chest, ear, sinus, throat and skin infections. Each tablet can be dispersed in water or swallowed, and the small 100 mg step lets the dose be built up to match a child’s weight.

How does it work?

This macrolide antibiotic stops bacteria from producing the proteins they need, which halts their growth. It is absorbed into infected tissue and leaves slowly, so a short course of three to five days keeps working beyond the final dose. It cannot treat illnesses caused by viruses, such as colds and most sore throats.

Dosing by weight

The standard UK regimen for children is 10 mg/kg once daily for three days. The table shows the usual weight bands; your doctor may prescribe differently.

Child’s weightDaily dose100 mg DT tablets per day
15–25 kg200 mg2
26–35 kg300 mg3
36–45 kg400 mg4
Over 45 kg500 mg (adult dose)An adult-strength tablet is more practical

Children under 15 kg need a precisely calculated dose, which often calls for an oral suspension rather than tablets. Other schedules, such as a larger first-day dose followed by four smaller daily doses, are also used.

How to prepare a dispersible tablet

  1. Put the tablet or tablets into a small cup with just enough water to cover them.
  2. Stir until they have broken up into a cloudy mixture.
  3. Have the child drink it all straight away.
  4. Add a splash more water, swirl and drink again, so no medicine stays in the cup.

Give the dose once a day at a similar time, with or without food. If a dose is missed, give it when remembered that day, but do not give two doses at once. Carry on for the whole course even when the child seems better.

What are the side effects?

Diarrhea, stomach ache, nausea and vomiting are the most common, and some children get a headache or rash. Contact a doctor urgently if the child has swelling of the face or mouth, trouble breathing, a blistering rash, yellowing of the eyes, fainting or an irregular heartbeat, or diarrhea that is severe, watery or bloody.

Who should not take it?

It is unsuitable for children allergic to azithromycin or any macrolide, and for those who had liver problems with azithromycin before. Tell the prescriber about heart rhythm disorders, including long QT syndrome, liver or kidney disease, myasthenia gravis, and all other medicines, particularly those affecting heart rhythm, digoxin and warfarin. If a teenager taking it is pregnant or breastfeeding, the doctor needs to know.
