About AB Phylline 200 mg SR Tablets
AB Phylline 200 mg SR is a sustained-release tablet of acebrophylline from Sun Pharmaceutical. Acebrophylline is an airway-relaxing medicine related to theophylline that also helps thin mucus, so it is used in some countries to ease wheezing, chest tightness and sticky phlegm in asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is one of the most popular respiratory products in our store.
How it works
Acebrophylline combines two actions:
- Bronchodilation: it relaxes the muscles around the airways, making breathing easier.
- Mucus regulation: it helps produce thinner mucus that is easier to cough up, and it has mild anti-inflammatory effects on the airway lining.
It is usually taken alongside inhaled treatments rather than instead of them.
How to take it
The sustained-release 200 mg tablet is usually taken once a day, as prescribed, swallowed whole with water after a meal. Do not crush or chew it, because this would release the whole dose at once. The standard-release AB Phylline 100 mg capsules are normally taken twice daily instead.
Pack sizes
Supplied in strips of 10 and sold in packs of 30, 60 or 90, from $16.
Side effects
- Nausea, stomach upset, heartburn or diarrhea
- Loss of appetite or headache
- Less often, palpitations or restlessness
Stop and seek medical advice for a very fast or irregular heartbeat, severe vomiting, or signs of an allergic reaction such as rash or swelling.
Cautions
Tell your doctor if you have heart disease, high blood pressure, a stomach ulcer, liver or kidney problems, epilepsy or an overactive thyroid, or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. Because acebrophylline is related to theophylline, check with a pharmacist before combining it with other xanthine medicines such as theophylline or doxofylline. Acebrophylline is not licensed in the UK or US.
Helping mucus clear
Drinking plenty of fluids, gentle breathing exercises and staying active all help to loosen and clear phlegm. If your mucus changes color, becomes bloody, or you develop a fever or worsening breathlessness, see a doctor, as you may need other treatment for a chest infection or a flare-up.
Storage
Keep in the original strip at room temperature, away from moisture and children.
