About Bonair Inhaler
Bonair Inhaler is a prescription metered-dose aerosol inhaler containing albuterol (salbutamol), made by MidasCare Pharma, used as a reliever for wheezing, breathlessness and chest tightness in asthma and to prevent symptoms brought on by exercise. Each canister provides 200 metered puffs. Albuterol aerosols of this kind normally deliver 100 micrograms per puff, so confirm the strength printed on your canister.
How does Bonair work?
Albuterol belongs to the short-acting beta-2 agonists, often called SABAs. A puff delivers the drug to the smooth muscle of the airways, which relaxes and lets the narrowed tubes widen. Breathing typically becomes easier within minutes, and the effect wears off after about 4 to 6 hours. It does not reduce the underlying swelling and mucus in asthmatic airways; that job belongs to an inhaled corticosteroid.
How to use Bonair Inhaler
- Shake the canister, then breathe out away from the mouthpiece.
- Place the mouthpiece between your lips, press once as you begin a slow inhalation, and keep breathing in.
- Hold the breath for up to 10 seconds, then let it out gently.
- For a second puff, wait roughly half a minute and shake again.
- Test-spray into the air before first use or after a spell without use, following the leaflet.
A spacer device reduces the amount of drug deposited in the mouth and throat and is recommended for children and for anyone who finds the timing tricky.
Dose
Adults usually take 1 or 2 puffs as needed for symptoms, and 2 puffs 15–30 minutes before exercise. Children normally take 1 puff, rising to 2 if needed. Leave at least 4 hours between doses unless your action plan says otherwise, and contact your doctor if you need more than 8 puffs in a day.
Buying in larger packs
Bonair is sold in multi-inhaler packs of 5, 10 or 15, from $35. Larger packs make it easier to keep a reliever at home, at work or school, and in a sports bag. Buying extra is not a substitute for an asthma review, though: if your household is getting through inhalers quickly, that is a warning sign that control needs attention. Write the start date on each inhaler, keep a rough count of the puffs used, and check expiry dates before storing spares.
Signs your asthma is not controlled
- You use your reliever on more than two days a week.
- Symptoms wake you at night.
- Asthma limits your activity or work.
- Relief from a dose lasts less than 3 or 4 hours.
Any of these calls for a visit to your doctor, who may add a preventer such as Budecort Inhaler. Call 911 if breathing is severely difficult or your reliever does not help.
What are the side effects?
Mild shakiness, palpitations, headache and nervousness are the usual complaints, and they tend to fade with continued use. Rare but important effects include wheezing immediately after inhaling, chest pain, a very fast or irregular heartbeat, low potassium (muscle weakness or cramps) and allergic swelling. Stop and get medical help promptly if they occur.
Precautions
Tell your prescriber about heart disease, high blood pressure, thyroid problems, diabetes, seizures and all medicines you take, especially beta-blockers, diuretics, digoxin, and antidepressants of the MAOI or tricyclic type. Ask your doctor about use during pregnancy or breastfeeding; well-controlled asthma matters for both mother and baby.
Storage and care
Store below 86°F (30°C), away from direct sun and freezing temperatures. A cold canister may spray less well, so warm it in your hands first. Never pierce or incinerate the canister. Rinse the plastic actuator weekly with warm water and let it dry thoroughly.
