About Ciplox D
Ciplox D is a combination eye and ear drop from Cipla containing ciprofloxacin 0.3%, an antibiotic, and dexamethasone 0.1%, a corticosteroid. The antibiotic clears the bacterial infection while the steroid calms the redness, swelling and discomfort that come with it.
When a doctor may prescribe it
- Bacterial eye infections with significant inflammation, such as blepharitis or conjunctivitis
- Inflammation after eye surgery, where infection risk also needs covering
- Outer ear infections (otitis externa) with swelling, if the eardrum is intact
Why a proper examination matters
Steroid eye drops can be harmful if the diagnosis is wrong. Dexamethasone can make viral (herpes) and fungal eye infections much worse, sometimes threatening sight. Only use Ciplox D after a doctor or eye specialist has examined your eye; never use leftover drops for a new red eye. For straightforward bacterial conjunctivitis, a plain antibiotic such as Ciplox Eye Drops is usually enough.
How to use it
Eyes: the usual dose is one or two drops into the affected eye four to six times a day, as prescribed. Avoid touching the dropper tip to anything.
Ears: lie with the affected ear upwards, instil the prescribed drops, and stay in that position for a few minutes.
Courses are normally short, often about a week. Do not stop suddenly after long use or continue longer than prescribed.

Steroid-related risks
- Raised eye pressure (glaucoma) with longer use, so pressure checks may be needed
- Cataract formation with prolonged treatment
- Slower healing of the corneal surface
Other side effects
Brief stinging, a bitter taste and blurred vision straight after application. Stop and seek advice if pain, vision loss or light sensitivity develops.
Cautions
Remove contact lenses during treatment. Tell your doctor if you are pregnant or breastfeeding, or have glaucoma.
Using it in the ear
Before using drops in the ear, gently wipe away any visible discharge from the outer ear with a tissue, without pushing anything into the canal. Warm the bottle in your hand for a minute, as cold drops can cause dizziness. Do not use it in the ear if you have, or might have, a perforated eardrum or grommets unless an ear specialist advises it.
