About Etozox 90
Etozox 90 tablets from Cipla contain etoricoxib 90 mg, a selective COX-2 inhibitor. It belongs to the non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) family and relieves pain, swelling and stiffness. By targeting the COX-2 enzyme, which drives inflammation, it tends to cause fewer stomach problems than older NSAIDs such as diclofenac or naproxen, although it does not remove the risk.
What the 90 mg dose is used for
- Rheumatoid arthritis and ankylosing spondylitis, where 90 mg once daily is the upper dose for ongoing use
- Short-term acute pain, for example after dental surgery, for a maximum of three days
For osteoarthritis the usual dose is lower, 30–60 mg once daily; see Etozox 60. A higher dose is used only briefly for acute gout, under medical direction.
How to take it
Take one tablet once a day, with or without food, swallowed with water. Use the lowest dose that controls your symptoms, for the shortest time possible. Never take it together with other NSAIDs such as ibuprofen, diclofenac or high-dose aspirin.

Heart and blood pressure warning
COX-2 inhibitors can increase the risk of heart attack and stroke. Etoricoxib must not be used by people with heart failure, ischaemic heart disease, stroke or mini-stroke, peripheral arterial disease, or blood pressure that is not well controlled. Your blood pressure should be checked before you start and within a couple of weeks of starting.
Other people who should not take it
- Anyone with an active stomach ulcer or bleeding, or inflammatory bowel disease
- People with severe liver disease or significantly reduced kidney function
- Those who have had asthma, hives or nasal polyps triggered by aspirin or NSAIDs
- Women in late pregnancy; avoid it too while breastfeeding
Side effects
Swollen ankles, raised blood pressure, indigestion, dizziness and headache are among the more common. Seek urgent help for chest pain, sudden weakness, black stools or vomiting blood.
Protecting your stomach
If you are over 65, have had a stomach ulcer before, or take aspirin, steroids or blood thinners, your doctor may prescribe a stomach-protecting medicine such as omeprazole alongside etoricoxib. Report persistent indigestion to your doctor rather than treating it yourself.
