About Isotroin 30 mg Soft Capsules
Isotroin 30 mg is a prescription soft gelatin capsule containing 30 mg of isotretinoin, made by Cipla Limited, used to treat severe acne, such as nodular, cystic or scarring acne, that has not cleared with antibiotics or topical therapy. It is the highest Isotroin strength and is used when a larger daily dose is needed with fewer capsules.
How does it work?
Isotretinoin is an oral retinoid that dramatically lowers sebum production by reducing the size of the oil glands. It also corrects the abnormal shedding of cells that blocks pores and reduces inflammation. The result is fewer blackheads, spots and cysts, with benefits that often last for years.
Who is the 30 mg strength for?
Most people need 0.5–1 mg per kg each day. A 30 mg capsule matches the lower end for an adult of about 60 kg, while heavier adults on higher doses may take two capsules a day (60 mg) or combine 30 mg with another strength. Many dermatologists begin with a lower strength for the first weeks and move to 30 mg once dryness and blood tests are acceptable.
How to take Isotroin 30 mg
- Swallow the capsule whole with a main meal, not on an empty stomach.
- Take it at a consistent time each day, or split doses between two meals if told to.
- A typical course lasts 16–24 weeks.
- If you miss a dose, take it when you remember on the same day, or leave it out if the next is almost due.
Mood and mental health
Depression, anxiety, mood swings and, rarely, suicidal thoughts and behaviour have been reported in people taking isotretinoin. Tell your prescriber about any past mental health problems before starting, and ask family or friends to mention any changes they notice. If your mood drops or you have thoughts of harming yourself, stop the capsules and seek help immediately.
Pregnancy prevention
Isotretinoin is highly teratogenic. Anyone who could conceive must be on a pregnancy prevention programme (UK Pregnancy Prevention Programme; iPLEDGE in the US), using two methods of contraception from one month before treatment until one month after, with pregnancy tests before starting, monthly and after the course. Male patients do not need contraception because of isotretinoin, as the amount in semen is tiny, but capsules must never be given to anyone else. Do not breastfeed during treatment.
What are the side effects?
Dryness of the lips, skin, eyes and nose is almost universal. Joint and muscle pain, headache, nosebleeds and sunburn are common. Blood tests monitor lipids and liver function. Get urgent medical help for a severe headache with nausea or blurred vision, severe abdominal pain, bloody diarrhoea, yellowing of the skin or eyes, or a blistering or peeling rash.
Precautions
Isotroin 30 mg must not be taken in pregnancy or breastfeeding, or with severe liver disease, very high blood fats or excess vitamin A. Avoid tetracycline antibiotics and vitamin A supplements, and keep alcohol low. Blood donation is prohibited during the course and for one month afterwards, and waxing, laser and dermabrasion should wait six months after treatment ends. Use SPF 30+ sunscreen every day.
