About Levolin 2 mg Tablet
Levolin 2 mg is a prescription tablet containing 2 mg of levalbuterol (levosalbutamol), made by Cipla Limited, used as an oral bronchodilator for wheezing, chest tightness and shortness of breath in asthma and COPD. It is the higher of the two tablet strengths and is intended mainly for adults and teenagers; its effect is broadly comparable to a 4 mg albuterol (salbutamol) tablet.

How does it work?
Levalbuterol is the active mirror-image form of albuterol. It stimulates beta-2 receptors in the muscle lining the airways, which loosens the muscle and opens the bronchial tubes. After you swallow it, the drug is absorbed from the gut and circulates around the whole body. That explains both its gradual onset and why tremor and a pounding heart are more noticeable than with an inhaled dose.
How to take Levolin 2 mg
Take each tablet with a glass of water, with or without food, exactly as prescribed. A common adult regimen is 1–2 mg three times a day, spread across the day, so the 2 mg tablet is generally used once a doctor has decided you need the upper end of that range. Stick to your schedule and never add extra tablets on bad days: needing more is a signal to see your doctor, not to raise the dose yourself. Levalbuterol tablets are not marketed in the United States, and Levolin is an Indian brand made for markets outside the US.
Why do doctors usually prefer inhalers?
An inhaled dose of levalbuterol is measured in micrograms, while a tablet dose is measured in milligrams, because swallowing it sends most of the drug around the body instead of straight into the lungs. For this reason asthma guidelines generally advise against oral bronchodilators unless an inhaled form cannot be used. For sudden symptoms, keep an inhaled reliever such as the Levolin Inhaler close at hand. Our guide to asthma inhaler types explains the alternatives.
What are the side effects?
At this strength the most noticeable effects are shaky hands, a fast or pounding heartbeat, restlessness and headache. Muscle cramps, poor sleep and nausea can also occur. Levalbuterol may lower blood potassium and raise blood sugar, so people with diabetes may need extra glucose checks. Stop the tablets and get emergency help if breathing suddenly worsens after a dose, if you develop chest pain or an irregular heartbeat, or if you notice facial swelling, hives or other signs of an allergic reaction.
Who should avoid it?
- Anyone allergic to levalbuterol, albuterol or any ingredient in the tablet.
- People with heart rhythm problems, coronary heart disease or poorly controlled high blood pressure need a careful medical assessment first.
- Extra care is needed with an overactive thyroid, epilepsy, diabetes or low potassium.
- Non-selective beta-blockers, such as propranolol tablets or timolol eye drops, can cancel its effect and provoke bronchospasm.
- Diuretics, oral steroids and theophylline can add to potassium loss; MAO inhibitors and tricyclic antidepressants may increase effects on the heart.
In pregnancy or while breastfeeding, take it only on your doctor’s advice, since well-controlled breathing matters for both mother and baby.

Frequently asked questions
Can I split the tablet to get 1 mg?
Ask your pharmacist first. A separate Levolin 1 mg tablet gives an exact lower dose.
Does Levolin 2 mg replace my preventer inhaler?
No. It relaxes the airways but does not calm inflammation, so keep using any inhaled steroid you have been prescribed.
Where can I find other breathing medicines?
See the respiratory category.
