Description

Same active ingredient (montelukast) as Singulair®, the US brand. Montair 10 mg is an Indian brand, made and licensed in India. Compare all Montelukast (Generic Singulair) options.

About Montair 10 mg

Montair 10 mg tablets from Cipla contain montelukast, a leukotriene receptor antagonist. Leukotrienes are chemicals your body releases during an allergic or asthmatic reaction; they tighten the airways, cause swelling and increase mucus. By blocking them, montelukast helps keep airways open and calms allergy symptoms. It is a preventer, taken every day, not a rescue medicine.

What it is prescribed for

  • Long-term control of asthma in adults and teenagers aged 15 and over, usually added to an inhaled steroid
  • Preventing asthma triggered by exercise
  • Hay fever and year-round allergic rhinitis, when other treatments have not worked or are unsuitable

How to take Montair 10 mg

The usual dose is one 10 mg tablet once a day, in the evening for asthma, and food makes no difference to how well it is absorbed. For exercise-induced symptoms, a dose at least two hours before activity is sometimes used instead, but never take more than one tablet in 24 hours. Keep taking it even when you feel well, and continue your other asthma medicines unless your doctor changes them.

Montair will not stop an asthma attack that has already started. Always carry your reliever inhaler; our inhaler guide explains the difference between relievers and preventers.

Important: mood and behavior changes

Montelukast carries a boxed warning about neuropsychiatric effects. Some people have experienced agitation, vivid dreams, sleep problems, anxiety, depression and, rarely, suicidal thoughts. Stop taking it and contact a doctor promptly if you or your family notice any change in mood or behavior. Because of this, regulators advise against using it for mild hay fever when other options work.

Pack sizes

Available as 30, 60 or 90 tablets, from $18. For children aged 6 to 14, see Montair Chewable 5 mg.

Other side effects

Headache, stomach pain, diarrhea and upper respiratory infections are the most commonly reported. Seek medical help for a rash, swelling of the face or throat, or tingling and numbness in the limbs.

Before you start

Tell your doctor about liver problems, any history of depression or anxiety, and other medicines you take, particularly phenobarbital or rifampicin, which can reduce montelukast levels.
