About Omnacortil 30 mg

Omnacortil 30 mg is a prescription tablet containing 30 mg of prednisolone, made by Macleods Pharmaceuticals, used for significant flares of inflammatory, allergic, respiratory and autoimmune disease that call for a moderate-to-high steroid dose. A single tablet delivers the 30 mg daily dose often chosen for COPD flare-ups and as a starting dose in several rheumatic and bowel conditions.

Where does 30 mg fit?

SituationTypical prednisolone dose
COPD flare-up in adults30 mg daily for 5 days
Acute gout when NSAIDs and colchicine are unsuitableAbout 30–35 mg daily for 5 days
Adult asthma attack40–50 mg daily for at least 5 days
Autoimmune or bowel flareOften 20–40 mg daily, then reduced

These figures reflect common practice only; your prescriber decides your own dose and course length.

How does prednisolone work?

As a glucocorticoid, prednisolone enters cells and binds a receptor that controls hundreds of genes. The result is fewer inflammatory chemicals, less leaky blood vessels and a calmer immune system, which is why one medicine helps conditions as different as airway disease, arthritis and colitis.

How to take Omnacortil 30 mg

Take one tablet each morning with breakfast and a drink of water; an early dose lessens the chance of a restless night. Keep to the number of days on your prescription. If the course runs beyond three weeks, or you have had several courses recently, your doctor will lower the dose in stages, often moving to smaller strengths, instead of stopping it all at once.

Managing side effects at this dose

  • Sleep: take the tablet early and cut down on caffeine after lunch.
  • Appetite: plan meals, and limit salt and sugar to reduce fluid retention and weight gain.
  • Blood sugar: if you have diabetes, test more often, as steroids tend to push glucose up in the afternoon and evening.
  • Mood: feeling energized, irritable or low is common; tell someone close to you what to look out for.
  • Stomach: take it with food; your doctor may add a stomach-protecting medicine if you also need an NSAID.

Get medical help straight away for thoughts of self-harm or confused, unusual behavior, vomit that looks like coffee grounds or tarry stools, a high temperature, a painful blistering rash, or sudden blurred vision.

Who should not take it?

Prednisolone must not be used with a systemic fungal infection or a known allergy to it. Your doctor needs to know about diabetes, high blood pressure, heart or kidney problems, ulcers, glaucoma, thyroid disease, myasthenia gravis, tuberculosis or mental illness. Estrogen-containing contraceptives and drugs such as ketoconazole, clarithromycin and ritonavir can raise prednisolone levels, while phenytoin, carbamazepine and rifampin (rifampicin) reduce them. Live vaccines are generally postponed at this dose. Pregnant or breastfeeding women should take it only when a doctor has weighed up the need.

Pack sizes and storage
