Description

Same active ingredient (fluticasone/salmeterol) as Advair®, the US brand. Seretide Accuhaler is an Indian brand, made and licensed in India. Compare all Generic Advair (Fluticasone/Salmeterol) options.

About Seretide Accuhaler

Seretide Accuhaler, made by GlaxoSmithKline, is a dry-powder inhaler combining salmeterol 50 mcg with fluticasone propionate. Unlike a pressurized inhaler, the Accuhaler does not need you to coordinate pressing and breathing: the dose is released by your own inhalation. That makes it a good choice for people who struggle with metered-dose inhaler technique.

Strengths and uses

The Accuhaler comes in several strengths (salmeterol 50 mcg with fluticasone 100, 250 or 500 mcg per blister). The lower strengths are used as twice-daily asthma preventers; the 500 strength is also licensed for some adults with COPD who have frequent flare-ups. Your doctor chooses the right strength; check the label of the device you receive. A specific listing, Seretide Accuhaler 50/100 mcg, is also available.

How to use the Accuhaler

  1. Open: hold the outer case and push the thumb grip until it clicks.
  2. Load: slide the lever away from you until it clicks. The dose counter moves down by one. Do not play with the lever, as this wastes doses.
  3. Inhale: breathe out fully away from the device, seal your lips around the mouthpiece, and breathe in steadily and deeply.
  4. Hold: hold your breath for about ten seconds, then breathe out slowly.
  5. Close the device and rinse your mouth with water.

The usual dose is one inhalation twice a day, every day.

Pack sizes

Each Accuhaler contains 60 doses, a month’s supply at one inhalation twice daily. Sold as 1, 2 or 3 devices, from $39.

Side effects

Common effects include hoarseness, throat irritation, oral thrush, headache and muscle cramps. Salmeterol can cause tremor or a racing heart. In people with COPD, inhaled steroids slightly increase the risk of pneumonia, so report fever, increased cough or breathlessness.

Cautions

This is not a reliever; carry your rescue inhaler at all times. Tell your doctor about heart disease, diabetes, thyroid problems, or if you take beta-blockers, ritonavir or strong antifungals.

Day-to-day tips

Keep the Accuhaler level while you load and inhale, so the powder is not lost. If you are unsure whether you took a dose, do not take another; check the counter instead. A strong, steady breath matters more than speed, and a nurse or pharmacist can watch you use it to confirm your technique.

Storage

Keep the Accuhaler closed and dry, below 86°F (30°C). Never breathe into the device or wash it.
