About Wysolone 10 mg

Wysolone 10 mg is a prescription dispersible tablet containing 10 mg of prednisolone, made by Wyeth (Pfizer) in India, used to treat inflammatory and immune-related conditions including asthma, allergic disorders, arthritis, inflammatory bowel disease and skin disease. The 10 mg tablet sits in the middle of the Wysolone range and suits moderate doses of about 10–30 mg a day with fewer tablets than the 5 mg strength.

How does prednisolone work?

Prednisolone copies the anti-inflammatory action of cortisol but is about four times as potent. It enters cells, attaches to glucocorticoid receptors and dials down the genes responsible for inflammatory proteins. The immune system becomes less reactive, and swelling, mucus and pain decrease.

Choosing a Wysolone strength

StrengthOften used for
5 mgMaintenance doses, small adjustments and lighter children
10 mgModerate daily doses and many weight-based pediatric doses
20 mgShort high-dose courses, such as 40 mg a day as two tablets

How to take Wysolone 10 mg

  • Take the daily dose once, in the morning, after eating.
  • Either swallow the tablet with water or let it dissolve in a small amount of water and drink the mixture straight away.
  • Follow the exact number of days on your label; a short course may end abruptly, while a longer one is tapered.
  • If a dose is missed, take it the same day if you remember; otherwise continue the next morning without doubling.

Steroids, infections and vaccines

Prednisolone lowers your defenses against infection and can hide the usual signs, such as fever. If you have not had chickenpox or measles, avoid close contact with anyone who has chickenpox, shingles or measles, and contact your doctor promptly if exposed, since protective treatment may be needed. Tell your doctor about any past tuberculosis. Live vaccines such as MMR, varicella or yellow fever are usually avoided on higher doses; inactivated vaccines like flu shots are generally fine.

Blood sugar and blood pressure

Steroids raise glucose and can make diabetes harder to control or reveal it for the first time. People with diabetes may need extra monitoring and a temporary change in treatment. Blood pressure can also rise, and fluid retention may cause ankle swelling, so regular checks are wise during longer courses.

What are the side effects?

Typical effects are increased hunger, indigestion, insomnia, irritability and a flushed face. Prolonged use can lead to weight gain, bruising, muscle weakness, bone loss, cataracts and adrenal suppression. Urgent help is needed for severe depression or unusual thoughts, black or bloody stools, severe abdominal pain, sudden eye pain or vision changes, or a high fever.

Who should not take it?

It is contraindicated in systemic fungal infections and in anyone allergic to prednisolone. Take care with heart failure, kidney or liver disease, peptic ulcer, osteoporosis, glaucoma or a history of psychiatric illness. Important interactions include NSAIDs, warfarin, diabetes medicines, diuretics, rifampin (rifampicin) and antifungals such as itraconazole. Prednisolone is used in pregnancy and breastfeeding when a doctor considers it necessary.
