How does tretinoin 0.1% work?
Acne starts when dead cells and oil block the opening of a hair follicle. Tretinoin, a vitamin A acid, normalizes how these cells mature and shed, so the plug never forms or is pushed out. At 0.1% the effect on comedones is stronger than at lower concentrations, but so is the tendency to irritate. Over months, clearer pores mean fewer inflamed papules and pustules too.
Is the 0.1% strength right for you?
Higher is not automatically better. The 0.1% gel suits thick, oily skin that has tolerated 0.05% well but still has stubborn comedones. Starting straight on it often causes enough redness and peeling that people give up. In darker skin, irritation can leave brown marks (post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation) that last longer than the spots, so a gentler strength is sometimes the wiser choice. Your prescriber will decide.
How to apply A Ret Gel 0.1%
Apply to clean, fully dry skin in the evening. Use a pea-sized amount spread thinly over the whole affected area, avoiding the eyes, eyelids, mouth and nostrils. Do not apply extra: a thicker layer only increases irritation, not results. Wash your hands afterwards. Use a non-comedogenic moisturizer and daily SPF 30+ sunscreen.
Managing irritation at the higher strength
- Apply every second or third night at first, building up as your skin allows and your prescriber advises.
- Put a plain moisturizer on first if your doctor recommends this buffering approach; it softens the sting.
- Pause for a night or two if skin becomes raw, then restart less often.
- Skip facial scrubs, toners with alcohol, and acid peels while using it.
What are the side effects?
Expect some dryness, peeling, redness and a burning or tingling sensation, which usually ease after the first month. Skin burns more easily in the sun and in wind or cold. Seek medical advice promptly for blistering, crusting, marked swelling or any sign of allergy.
Who should not use it?
Tretinoin should not be used in pregnancy or when planning a pregnancy; discuss breastfeeding with your doctor. Keep it off eczema, sunburnt or broken skin. Tell your prescriber if you take medicines that increase sun sensitivity, such as doxycycline, thiazide diuretics or phenothiazine antipsychotics. Use benzoyl peroxide at a different time of day, and avoid waxing treated areas.
