Description

Same active ingredient (clindamycin) as Cleocin®, the US brand. Dalacin C 150 mg is an Indian brand, made and licensed in India.

About Dalacin C 150 mg Capsules

Dalacin C 150 mg is a prescription oral capsule containing 150 mg of clindamycin (as clindamycin hydrochloride), made by Pfizer India Ltd, used to treat serious bacterial infections caused by susceptible anaerobic bacteria, streptococci and staphylococci. Dalacin C is the brand name Pfizer uses outside the United States; in the US the same drug is sold as Cleocin HCl and as generic clindamycin capsules. This pack is made for the Indian market.

Important safety warning

Clindamycin is one of the antibiotics most strongly linked to Clostridioides difficile infection, a bowel infection that ranges from mild diarrhea to life-threatening colitis. It can begin during treatment or up to two months after the last dose. For this reason the US label reserves clindamycin for serious infections where less toxic antibiotics are not suitable, such as in some people allergic to penicillin. Contact your doctor at once for watery or bloody diarrhea, cramps or fever, and do not take loperamide or other anti-diarrhea medicines unless told to.

What is Dalacin C used for?

  • Skin and soft-tissue infections, including abscesses and infected wounds.
  • Bone and joint infections such as osteomyelitis.
  • Lower respiratory infections, including empyema and lung abscess.
  • Intra-abdominal and gynecological infections, usually alongside another antibiotic.
  • Dental abscesses, where it is a common choice for people who cannot take penicillin.

Use it only for an infection a clinician has diagnosed. It does nothing for colds, flu or other viral illnesses, and it does not reach the spinal fluid well enough to treat meningitis.

How to take Dalacin C 150 mg

  • Adults, serious infections: 150–300 mg every 6 hours.
  • Adults, more severe infections: 300–450 mg every 6 hours, as prescribed.
  • Children who can swallow capsules: 8–16 mg per kg of body weight per day for serious infections, or 16–20 mg/kg/day for more severe ones, split into three or four doses.
  • Swallow each capsule whole with a full glass of water so it does not irritate the esophagus, and stay upright afterward; meals do not affect absorption.
  • Space doses evenly and finish the course even if you feel better; streptococcal infections are usually treated for at least 10 days.

The 150 mg capsule allows flexible dosing, while Dalacin C 300 mg cuts the number of capsules at higher doses.

Is Dalacin C used for acne?

Oral clindamycin is not a routine acne treatment because of its bowel risks. When acne needs a tablet antibiotic, doctors usually choose a tetracycline such as Doxycycline 100 mg, and clindamycin is applied to the skin instead, for example as Clindoxyl Gel.

What are the side effects?

Common effects include diarrhea, nausea, stomach pain, a metallic taste and vaginal yeast infection. Get urgent medical help for severe or bloody diarrhea, a spreading rash with blisters or peeling skin, fever with swollen glands, yellowing of the skin or eyes, passing much less urine than usual, or swelling of the face and throat with difficulty breathing.

Who should not take it, and interactions

Do not take Dalacin C if you are allergic to clindamycin or lincomycin. Tell your doctor about any past colitis or bowel disease, liver or kidney problems, allergies such as asthma or eczema, or earlier severe drug rashes. Key interactions include:

  • Neuromuscular blockers given during surgery, whose effect may be strengthened.
  • Erythromycin, which can counteract clindamycin.
  • Rifampin (rifampicin) and other strong enzyme inducers, which can lower clindamycin levels.
  • Warfarin, since raised INR and bleeding have been reported.
  • Live oral typhoid vaccine, which antibiotics can make less effective.

Clindamycin crosses the placenta and is used in pregnancy when the benefit is clear, mainly after the first trimester. Small amounts enter breast milk, so watch a nursing baby for diarrhea, thrush or blood in the stool.

Pack sizes and storage

Packs of 30, 60 or 90 capsules, from $27. Store below 77°F (25°C) in the original strip, protected from moisture.

Frequently asked questions
