Description

About Melalite Forte Cream

Melalite Forte Cream, from Abbott India, is a hydroquinone cream for fading dark patches of skin. Hydroquinone is a well-established skin-lightening ingredient used for melasma, sun spots and post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, the marks left behind after acne or skin injury. The Forte version is the stronger formulation, typically 4% hydroquinone; check the carton for the exact strength.

How hydroquinone works

Hydroquinone inhibits tyrosinase, the key enzyme in melanin production. With less new pigment being made, existing dark patches gradually fade as the skin naturally renews itself. It does not remove your natural skin color and should only be applied to the discolored areas.

How to use it

  • Test first: apply a small amount to a patch of skin behind the ear or on the inner arm and wait 24 hours.
  • Apply a thin layer to the dark areas only, usually once or twice a day as directed.
  • Avoid contact with the eyes, lips and broken skin.
  • Protect treated skin every day with a broad-spectrum sunscreen, SPF 30 or higher. Without sun protection, pigment returns quickly.

How long to use it

Lightening usually becomes visible after 4–12 weeks. Hydroquinone is generally used for about three to four months, then paused. If you see no improvement after three months, speak to a doctor. Continuous long-term use can rarely cause exogenous ochronosis, a bluish-black darkening that is hard to treat.

Pack sizes

Sold as 30 g tubes in packs of 1, 3 or 6, from $5.

Side effects

Mild redness, dryness, itching or stinging can occur, especially at first. Stop and seek advice for blistering, cracking, marked irritation, or any unexpected darkening of the skin.

Cautions

Not recommended in pregnancy or while breastfeeding. Do not use with benzoyl peroxide or hydrogen peroxide at the same time, as this can cause temporary staining. Children should not use it.

Where it fits in treatment

Single-ingredient hydroquinone suits milder or early melasma and sun spots. For stubborn patches, a doctor may prescribe a triple combination such as Melacare Cream. Once pigment has faded, a gentler maintenance cream plus sunscreen helps keep it away.

Storage

Keep the tube closed and store below 77°F (25°C). Hydroquinone darkens when exposed to air and light; discard cream that has turned brown.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use it on my whole face?

No, only on the dark patches, to avoid uneven lightening.

Will my melasma come back?

It can, particularly with sun or hormonal changes, so ongoing sun protection is essential.
