About Montair LC Kid
Montair LC Kid is a prescription children’s tablet containing montelukast 4 mg and levocetirizine 2.5 mg, made by Cipla Limited, used to relieve allergic rhinitis, including sneezing, an itchy runny nose, congestion and watery eyes, in young children. It pairs a leukotriene blocker with a second-generation antihistamine, so a child takes one small tablet in place of two separate medicines.
What is in each tablet?
| Ingredient | Amount | Role |
|---|---|---|
| Montelukast | 4 mg | Blocks leukotrienes, which cause nasal blockage, airway swelling and mucus |
| Levocetirizine | 2.5 mg | Blocks histamine H1 receptors, easing itching, sneezing and a dripping nose |
How does Montair LC Kid work?
An allergic reaction releases several messengers at once. Histamine acts within minutes and is responsible for most of the itch, sneeze and watery discharge. Leukotrienes build up more slowly and keep the nose congested and the airways irritable. Targeting both pathways can help children whose symptoms are not controlled by an antihistamine on its own. Levocetirizine usually starts working within an hour or two, while the montelukast part builds up over several days.
Is this combination right for my child?
This fixed-dose combination is made for the Indian market and is not sold as a single tablet in the United States, where doctors prescribe the two ingredients separately. US labeling for levocetirizine alone uses 2.5 mg once daily for ages 6 to 11 and 1.25 mg for children from 6 months to 5 years, so only a pediatrician should decide whether this fixed amount suits a younger child. For ongoing nasal allergies, a steroid nasal spray is often tried first; our guide to nasal sprays for allergies explains the choices. Montair LC Kid is not a rescue medicine for wheezing or asthma attacks.
How to give Montair LC Kid
- The usual schedule is one tablet once a day in the evening, or as prescribed. Never give more than one tablet in 24 hours.
- Follow the pack directions on how to give it; dispersible versions can be stirred into a spoonful of water and given immediately.
- It may be taken with or without food.
- Do not combine it with other montelukast products such as Montair Chewable 4 mg, or with extra antihistamines like cetirizine, unless the doctor has planned this.
- For seasonal allergies, your doctor may advise using it only through the pollen season.
What are the side effects?
Sleepiness, tiredness, dry mouth, headache and a mild stomach upset are the most likely. Some children become restless or irritable rather than drowsy. Levocetirizine can occasionally make it hard to pass urine, and a few people develop intense itching after stopping long-term use. Seek urgent care for swelling of the face or throat, hives with breathing difficulty, or a seizure.
Montelukast boxed warning
Montelukast has a US boxed warning about neuropsychiatric events. Watch for bad dreams, disturbed sleep, sleepwalking, aggression, anxiety, low mood or behavior that seems out of character. If you notice any of these, stop the tablets and contact the doctor promptly.
Who should not take it?
Do not use it if your child is allergic to montelukast, levocetirizine, cetirizine or hydroxyzine. Levocetirizine leaves the body through the kidneys, and US labeling advises against it for children under 12 with kidney impairment, so mention any kidney condition. Also tell the doctor about epilepsy, liver disease or phenylketonuria, and about sedating cough and cold syrups, phenobarbital or rifampin. If your child seems drowsy, supervise activities like cycling and climbing.
Pack sizes and storage
Montair LC Kid is available in packs of 30, 60 or 90 tablets, from $10. Store below 77°F (25°C) in a dry place, keep tablets in the strip until needed, and keep the pack out of children’s reach.
