Description
About Omnacortil 10 mg
Omnacortil 10 mg tablets, made by Macleods Pharmaceuticals, contain prednisolone, an oral corticosteroid. Prednisolone rapidly reduces inflammation and calms the immune system. It is prescribed as a short course for asthma attacks and flare-ups of COPD, and for many other inflammatory and allergic conditions, including severe allergic reactions, inflammatory bowel disease, some skin conditions and rheumatic disorders.
How it is used for asthma
During a significant asthma attack, a short burst of prednisolone helps settle airway inflammation over a few days. Adults are commonly given 40–50 mg a day for at least five days, for example four or five 10 mg tablets once daily, as directed by a doctor. Children receive weight-based doses. Steroid tablets work alongside inhalers; they do not replace your preventer.
How to take it
- Take the whole daily dose in the morning with food, which reduces stomach upset and sleep disturbance.
- Follow the course exactly as prescribed.
- If you have taken prednisolone for more than three weeks, or repeatedly, do not stop suddenly. The dose must be reduced gradually as your doctor advises.
- If you are on longer treatment, carry a steroid card.
Pack sizes
Available in packs of 30, 60 or 90 tablets, from $5. Other strengths include Omnacortil 5 mg and Omnacortil 20 mg.
Side effects
Short courses may cause increased appetite, indigestion, difficulty sleeping, mood changes and raised blood sugar. Longer use can lead to weight gain, thinning bones, cataracts, high blood pressure, muscle weakness and a higher risk of infection. Seek medical advice for severe mood changes, signs of infection, black stools or abdominal pain, or very high blood sugar.
Cautions
- Tell your doctor about diabetes, high blood pressure, stomach ulcers, osteoporosis, glaucoma, depression or a history of tuberculosis.
- Avoid close contact with chickenpox or shingles if you have not had them, and seek advice if exposed.
- Anti-inflammatory painkillers such as ibuprofen increase the risk of stomach bleeding.
- Live vaccines may be unsuitable during treatment.
Storage
Store below 86°F (30°C) in the original strip, out of the reach of children.
