About Tiova Rotacaps

Tiova Rotacaps from Cipla contain tiotropium bromide 18 mcg in capsules designed to be inhaled through a Rotahaler device. Tiotropium is a long-acting muscarinic antagonist (LAMA), a type of bronchodilator that keeps the airways open for a full 24 hours. It is mainly used as a once-daily maintenance treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), including chronic bronchitis and emphysema.

How it works

The nerves controlling the airways release acetylcholine, which makes the airway muscles tighten. Tiotropium blocks this signal, so the airways stay relaxed and wider, making breathing easier and reducing COPD flare-ups over time.

How to take Tiova Rotacaps

  • Inhale the contents of one capsule once a day, at the same time each day.
  • The capsule must be used in a Rotahaler. Never swallow the capsules.
  • Insert the capsule, twist the device to open it, breathe out away from the mouthpiece, then breathe in deeply and steadily. Repeat with a second breath from the same capsule to empty it.
  • Tiotropium is a maintenance treatment, not a rescue inhaler. Keep a quick-acting reliever for sudden breathlessness.

Pack sizes

Rotacaps come in packets of 15 and are sold in packs of 30, 60 or 90 capsules, from $14.

Side effects

The most common is a dry mouth, which is usually mild. Others include constipation, sore throat, cough, dizziness and blurred vision. Seek medical advice promptly for difficulty passing urine, painful red eyes with blurred vision or haloes, or a fast or irregular heartbeat.

Cautions

  • Narrow-angle glaucoma: avoid getting powder in your eyes, and tell your doctor if you have this condition.
  • Enlarged prostate or bladder outflow problems can worsen.
  • Moderate to severe kidney problems need monitoring.
  • Do not use with other LAMA medicines such as glycopyrronium or umeclidinium.

Getting the most from COPD treatment

Medicines work best alongside stopping smoking, staying active and pulmonary rehabilitation, which is an exercise and education program for people with lung disease. Annual flu vaccination and pneumococcal vaccination are also recommended. Tell your doctor if you have more flare-ups, as your treatment may need to be stepped up.

Storage

Keep capsules in their strip until use, below 86°F (30°C) and away from moisture. Keep the Rotahaler clean and dry.
