About Ivermectol 6 mg Tablets
Ivermectol 6 mg is a prescription tablet containing 6 mg of ivermectin, made by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, used to treat parasitic worm infections such as strongyloidiasis and filarial diseases, including onchocerciasis and, within combination programs, lymphatic filariasis. Doctors in some countries also use it for scabies. Ivermectin is an antiparasitic medicine rather than an antiviral, and Ivermectol is an Indian brand that has not been approved by the FDA.
How does it work?
Ivermectin belongs to the avermectin family, first derived from the soil bacterium Streptomyces avermitilis. It targets glutamate-gated chloride channels that exist only in invertebrates, leaving the parasite paralyzed. In filarial disease its main action is on the larval stage, the microfilariae, and it has little effect on adult worms.
Lymphatic filariasis and ivermectin
Lymphatic filariasis is spread by mosquitoes in parts of Africa, Asia, the Pacific and the Americas. Threadlike worms (Wuchereria bancrofti and Brugia species) live in the lymph vessels and can cause lymphedema, elephantiasis and hydrocele. Ivermectin clears microfilariae from the blood, which cuts transmission, but on its own it does not kill the adult worms. For that reason the World Health Organization uses it in yearly mass treatment alongside albendazole, sometimes adding diethylcarbamazine (DEC) in areas without river blindness. Ivermectin is not labeled for lymphatic filariasis in the US, so individual patients are best managed by a travel medicine or infectious disease specialist.
How to take Ivermectol 6 mg
- The dose depends on weight and infection: about 150 mcg/kg for onchocerciasis and about 200 mcg/kg for strongyloidiasis, each given as a single dose.
- Swallow the tablets whole with water while your stomach is empty.
- One 6 mg tablet covers a 200 mcg/kg dose for a child of around 66 lb (30 kg); adults usually need two or more.
- Repeat doses follow your doctor’s schedule rather than symptoms alone.
Before you start: Loa loa screening
Loiasis, the African eye worm, is common in the rainforest regions of Central and West Africa. In people carrying very high numbers of Loa loa microfilariae in the blood, ivermectin can trigger a rare but serious encephalopathy (brain inflammation) with confusion, stupor or coma, usually within a few days. If you have lived in or traveled to these regions, a blood test to count Loa loa larvae is normally done before ivermectin is given.
What are the side effects?
- Common: mild dizziness, nausea, diarrhea, stomach ache, tiredness and itching.
- In filarial infections: fever, headache, joint pain, swollen lymph nodes or scrotal tenderness as larvae die off.
- Rare: raised liver enzymes, a low white cell count and severe skin reactions.
Call 911 or go to an emergency room for confusion, severe sleepiness, seizures, unsteady walking, fainting from low blood pressure, or a spreading rash with blisters.
Who should not take it?
Avoid Ivermectol during pregnancy and in children who weigh less than 33 lb (15 kg), and ask a doctor before using it while breastfeeding. Tell your prescriber about warfarin, sedatives, liver disease and any treatment that suppresses the immune system.
