About Accufine 5 mg

Accufine 5 mg is a prescription soft capsule containing 5 mg of isotretinoin, made by Healing Pharma in India, used to treat severe acne that has failed to respond to antibiotics and topical treatment. At 5 mg it is the lowest strength in the Accufine line, intended for precise dose adjustments rather than as a complete daily dose for most adults.

Why would a doctor prescribe a 5 mg capsule?

  • Topping up a dose: a 45 mg daily dose, for example, can be built from a 40 mg and a 5 mg capsule.
  • Cautious starts: people with dry eyes, eczema or very sensitive skin may begin on a reduced amount.
  • Low-dose regimens: some dermatologists use 5–10 mg a day for persistent adult or very oily acne, an approach outside standard licensed dosing that still needs full monitoring.
  • Lighter patients: younger teenagers with a low body weight sometimes need small increments.

How does isotretinoin work?

Isotretinoin is a retinoid, a medicine chemically related to vitamin A. It acts on the sebaceous glands, reducing their size and the amount of oil they make. Pores are less likely to clog, the bacterium Cutibacterium acnes has less to feed on, and the inflammation behind red, tender lumps settles.

How to take Accufine 5 mg

Take the capsule with a meal and swallow it whole with water; food substantially increases how much isotretinoin your body absorbs. Standard dosing is weight based, starting around 0.5 mg per kg each day and rising to as much as 1 mg per kg, typically over 16–24 weeks. Your dermatologist will tell you exactly how many capsules of each strength to take and whether to split them between two meals. If you miss a dose, take it when you remember unless the next one is nearly due, and never take two together.

Before you start

Isotretinoin should only be prescribed by, or under the supervision of, a dermatologist. Expect a review of your acne history, your mental health and any medicines you take, plus fasting blood tests for cholesterol, triglycerides and liver function. UK guidance now asks for two prescribers to agree before isotretinoin is started in anyone under 18.

Pregnancy prevention

Even a small dose of isotretinoin can seriously harm an unborn baby, so the 5 mg strength is no safer in pregnancy than higher ones. Anyone who could conceive must take part in a pregnancy prevention program: the Pregnancy Prevention Program in the UK or iPLEDGE in the US. This normally means two effective contraceptive methods for a month before, throughout and for a month after treatment, plus pregnancy tests before the first capsule, monthly during the course and after it ends. Isotretinoin must not be taken while breastfeeding.

What are the side effects?

Dry and chapped lips affect nearly everyone, and dry skin, sore eyes, nosebleeds, sun sensitivity and aching joints are common. Lower doses usually cause milder dryness. Blood fats and liver enzymes can rise, which is why tests are repeated during treatment.

Seek medical help urgently if you notice depression, anxiety, mood swings or thoughts of suicide; a severe or persistent headache with nausea or visual disturbance; severe stomach or back pain; yellow skin; or a rash with blisters.

Who should not take it?

  • Anyone who is pregnant, trying to conceive or breastfeeding.
  • People with liver failure, markedly raised blood fats or high vitamin A levels.
  • Anyone taking tetracycline antibiotics (doxycycline, minocycline, lymecycline) or vitamin A supplements.
  • People allergic to isotretinoin or to any capsule ingredient, which may include soya oil.

During treatment and for one month after the final dose, you must not donate blood. Leave waxing, laser and dermabrasion until six months after finishing.

Pack sizes and storage

Accufine 5 mg is packed 10 soft capsules per strip and sold in packs of 100, 200 or 300, from $35. Store below 86°F (30°C) in the original strip, protected from light and moisture and out of children’s reach.

Frequently asked questions

Can 5 mg capsules be used on their own?

Occasionally, in a specialist low-dose plan. More often they are combined with a larger strength such as Accufine 10 mg or Accufine 20 mg.

Is there a 5 mg alternative from another maker?

Isotroin 5 mg by Cipla has the same strength. Keep to one brand unless your prescriber advises otherwise.

What treats milder acne?

Topical products listed in the acne category are usually tried first.

Written to inform, not to diagnose or prescribe. Accufine 5 mg is a prescription medicine to be used only under the care of a dermatologist.
