Description

Same active ingredient (ivermectin) as Stromectol®, the US brand. Iversun 12 mg is an Indian brand, made and licensed in India.

About Iversun 12 mg Tablets

Iversun 12 mg is a prescription tablet containing 12 mg of ivermectin, made by Sun Pharmaceutical Industries, used to treat parasitic infections including strongyloidiasis, onchocerciasis and scabies. The 12 mg tablet provides a full weight-based dose for many adults in one or two tablets. It is manufactured in India; the ivermectin tablet licensed in the US is a 3 mg product.

How does Iversun work?

Ivermectin interferes with nerve signaling in worms and mites. It attaches to glutamate-controlled chloride channels found only in invertebrates, so their nerve and muscle cells can no longer fire and the parasite stops moving and feeding. In people, the drug is normally kept out of the brain, which explains its wide safety margin at standard doses and also why overdoses that overwhelm this barrier are dangerous.

How to take Iversun 12 mg

  • Your doctor calculates the dose: roughly 200 mcg/kg once for strongyloidiasis or scabies, and 150 mcg/kg for river blindness.
  • Swallow the tablets with water at a time when your stomach is empty.
  • A repeat dose after one to two weeks is common for scabies, while river blindness is retreated every few months.
  • Stick to the prescribed number of tablets; extra tablets do not speed recovery.

Use human tablets only

Ivermectin sold for horses, cattle and dogs, such as pastes, drenches, injections and pour-ons, is far more concentrated and is not meant for people. Poison centers have reported serious toxicity from these products and from high doses of human tablets: vomiting, dizziness, tremor, confusion, hallucinations, seizures, low blood pressure and coma. If someone has taken too much, call Poison Help at 1-800-222-1222 in the US, or emergency services, right away.

What are the side effects?

At prescribed doses, side effects are usually mild: nausea, diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue, itching or a rash. Parasite die-off can cause fever, aching joints and swollen glands, particularly in river blindness. Rare serious effects include liver inflammation and severe skin reactions such as Stevens-Johnson syndrome. Seek help promptly for yellowing skin or eyes, dark urine, blistering, confusion or seizures.

Who should not take it?

Do not use it if you are allergic to ivermectin or pregnant, or for a child under 33 lb (15 kg). Talk to your doctor before breastfeeding. Heavy Loa loa infection must be ruled out in people from Central and West Africa. Mention warfarin, sleeping tablets and other sedating medicines, and any liver condition.

Pack sizes and storage

Strips of 10 tablets, sold in packs of 100, 200, 300 or 500, from $60. Keep below 86°F (30°C) in the original packaging and return unused tablets through a pharmacy take-back program.

Frequently asked questions

No. It is not approved or authorized for COVID-19 in the US, and major trials found no benefit.

Which lower strength is available?

Iversun 6 mg gives more flexibility for lighter patients.

How does Iversun differ from Ivermectol?

Both contain ivermectin and are listed under the same maker; Ivermectol 12 mg comes in smaller strips. All brands are in the ivermectin category, and scabies products are in the scabies range.

General guidance only. Iversun 12 mg is a prescription medicine; never use ivermectin without a confirmed diagnosis and a dose set by your doctor.
