About Melacare Cream

Melacare Cream is a triple-combination treatment for melasma, containing hydroquinone 2%, tretinoin 0.025% and mometasone furoate 0.1%. This three-ingredient approach is considered one of the most effective topical options for stubborn melasma, the brown or gray-brown patches that typically appear on the cheeks, forehead and upper lip.

How the three ingredients work together

  • Hydroquinone blocks tyrosinase, the enzyme skin uses to make melanin, so less pigment is produced.
  • Tretinoin speeds up cell turnover, so pigmented cells are shed faster and hydroquinone penetrates better.
  • Mometasone, a mild corticosteroid, reduces the irritation the other two ingredients can cause.

How to use Melacare

  1. Once a day at bedtime, cleanse and pat the face dry, then wait until the skin is completely dry.
  2. Apply a thin layer only to the dark patches, plus a tiny margin around them.
  3. Avoid the eyes, nostrils and lips, and wash your hands afterwards.
  4. Use a broad-spectrum SPF 30–50 sunscreen every morning; tinted sunscreens with iron oxides also block visible light that worsens melasma.

Because it contains a steroid, Melacare is intended for short courses, usually up to 8 weeks, as directed by a doctor. Longer use can thin the skin and cause visible blood vessels, acne-like spots or stretch marks.

Pack sizes

Supplied as 20 g tubes in packs of 1, 3 or 6, from $8.

Side effects

Mild redness, peeling, dryness and stinging are common. Stop and consult a doctor for severe irritation, blistering, or unusual darkening of the treated skin.

Who should not use it

Avoid during pregnancy and breastfeeding. Do not use on broken skin, eczema or rosacea, or around the eyes. Do a patch test on a small area first if you have sensitive skin.

After the course

Melasma tends to return, particularly after sun exposure. Once patches have faded, doctors often switch to a gentler maintenance option such as azelaic acid (Aziderm 20% Cream) together with daily sunscreen.

Storage

Store below 77°F (25°C) in a cool, dry place.

Tips that improve results

Heat and hormones both trigger melasma, so avoid saunas and hot yoga during treatment, and mention any hormonal contraception to your doctor. Take a clear photo in the same light every two weeks to judge progress fairly.
