About Seroflo Rotacaps 100 mcg

Seroflo Rotacaps 100 mcg are prescription dry-powder inhalation capsules containing salmeterol 50 mcg and fluticasone propionate 100 mcg, made by Cipla Limited, used for twice-daily maintenance treatment of asthma. This is the lowest-steroid capsule in the Seroflo range, suited to adults and children aged 4 and over whose asthma needs a long-acting bronchodilator alongside a low dose of inhaled corticosteroid. The capsules are inhaled through a Rotahaler or Revolizer device, never swallowed.

How does it work?

When you breathe in through the device, the powder from the opened capsule travels into the airways. Fluticasone propionate, a corticosteroid, gradually settles the inflammation that makes asthmatic airways swollen and oversensitive. Salmeterol, a long-acting beta-2 agonist, keeps the airway muscle relaxed for about 12 hours. Together they reduce daytime symptoms, night waking and flare-ups. Salmeterol must never be the only asthma controller; putting it in the same capsule as a steroid makes sure the two are always taken together.

When is the 100 mcg strength chosen?

  • When a low-dose inhaled steroid alone is not controlling asthma.
  • For children aged 4 to 11 who can manage a dry-powder device; 100/50 is the dose US and UK labeling set for this age group.
  • As a step-down for teens and adults once asthma has been stable on Seroflo Rotacaps 250 mcg for several months.

This strength is not used for COPD.

How to use Seroflo Rotacaps 100 mcg

  1. With dry hands, take one capsule from the bottle and close the lid tightly at once to keep out moisture.
  2. Put the capsule into the device and close it; the device then opens the capsule when you twist or press it, depending on the model.
  3. Breathe out away from the mouthpiece, then seal your lips around it and take a fast, deep breath in.
  4. Hold your breath for up to 10 seconds. Look at the capsule, and inhale a second time if powder is left.
  5. Throw away the empty shell, then rinse your mouth, gargle and spit.

Young children need an adult to load the device and watch each dose. If a child cannot take a quick, strong breath, a metered-dose inhaler with a spacer, such as Seroflo Inhaler 50 mcg, may suit them better.

Dose

One capsule twice a day, morning and evening, for adults and children alike. Do not take more than 2 capsules in 24 hours. A pack of 30 capsules lasts 15 days, so most people order 60 for a month. Seroflo is not a rescue treatment; keep a reliever such as Asthalin Rotacaps or an albuterol inhaler for sudden symptoms.

What are the side effects?

Hoarseness, throat irritation, oral thrush and headache are the most frequent; rinsing after each dose helps. Tremor, a pounding heartbeat and muscle cramps can come from salmeterol. Inhaled steroids may slightly slow growth in children, so height is usually measured at check-ups. Rarely, the powder triggers a sudden wheeze straight after inhaling: use your reliever and get medical help. Seek urgent care for swelling of the face or tongue.

Cautions

Tell your doctor about heart rhythm problems, high blood pressure, diabetes, an overactive thyroid, eye conditions, or tuberculosis. Ritonavir, cobicistat, ketoconazole, itraconazole and clarithromycin can raise drug levels sharply. Avoid non-selective beta-blockers. The capsules contain lactose, which matters for anyone with a severe milk-protein allergy. Do not add a second long-acting beta-agonist, and talk to your doctor before stopping or if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Pack sizes and storage

Available in packs of 30, 60 or 90 Rotacaps, from $9. You also need a compatible capsule inhaler device. Store below 77°F (25°C) in a dry place, keeping capsules in their container until use.
