About Tretoin 0.05% Cream
Tretoin 0.05% Cream is a prescription topical cream containing tretinoin 0.05%, made by HAB Pharmaceuticals and Research Ltd, used to treat acne vulgaris with comedones and mild to moderate inflamed spots. It is the middle strength in the Tretoin range, sitting between the 0.025% cream and the 0.1% gel, and is often the next step for people whose skin has settled on a lower concentration.
How does it work?
As a vitamin A acid, tretinoin normalizes the growth of keratin-producing cells inside hair follicles. This prevents the sticky build-up that creates microcomedones, the earliest stage of every blackhead, whitehead and pimple. In sun-damaged skin, longer-term use can also encourage new collagen in the dermis and a more even spread of pigment.
How to apply Tretoin 0.05% Cream
- In the evening, wash with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser.
- Pat dry and wait until the skin feels fully dry.
- Take a pea-sized amount for your whole face and spread it thinly and evenly.
- Do not apply near the eyes, mouth or inside the nose.
- Next morning, moisturize and use a broad-spectrum sunscreen.
Moving up from 0.025%
Prescribers commonly switch people to 0.05% once the lower strength has been used for two to three months without persistent irritation but acne is still active. After the change, a week or two of alternate-night use lets the skin adapt again. If redness returns and does not settle, going back to the lower strength is reasonable.
Combining with other acne treatments
For inflamed acne, doctors often pair tretinoin with an antibacterial product used in the morning, such as a clindamycin gel like Clindac A Gel or a benzoyl peroxide wash. Do not layer benzoyl peroxide with tretinoin at the same time, because it can inactivate conventional tretinoin. Only combine products your doctor has recommended.
Uneven skin tone and sun damage
Dermatologists also use tretinoin at 0.05% for fine lines, rough texture and patchy pigmentation such as melasma, sometimes in combination with other lightening agents. Improvement takes several months and is lost without daily sun protection. Our melasma treatment guide explains how these options fit together.
What are the side effects?
Dry, peeling and slightly red skin is normal early on, and some people feel stinging for a few minutes after applying. A short-lived acne flare, sunburn sensitivity and temporary color changes are possible. Get medical help if you notice blistering, swelling of the face or eyes, or a severe rash.
Who should not use it?
Avoid it if pregnant or planning to conceive, and do not use it while breastfeeding without medical advice. Do not use it on eczema, sunburnt, broken or wind-chapped skin, or in children under 12. Tell your prescriber about sun-sensitizing medicines such as tetracyclines, and avoid waxing, peels and scrubs on treated areas.
