About Tretoin 0.025% Cream

Tretoin 0.025% Cream is a prescription topical cream containing tretinoin 0.025%, made by HAB Pharmaceuticals and Research Ltd, used to treat mild to moderate acne vulgaris, particularly blackheads, whiteheads and small red bumps. It is the lowest standard strength of tretinoin, which makes it a common starting point for people new to retinoids and a sensible option for dry or reactive skin.

How does Tretoin work?

Tretoin contains tretinoin, the active acid form of vitamin A. It tells skin cells in the pore lining to renew and shed normally instead of clumping together. That keeps follicles open, pushes out existing comedones and reduces the blocked, oily conditions in which inflamed spots develop. Even at 0.025%, it acts on the same process as the stronger creams; it simply does so more gently.

Why start with 0.025%?

Retinoid irritation, often called retinisation, usually peaks in the first two to four weeks. A low concentration keeps redness and flaking manageable, so you are more likely to keep using it long enough to see results. Many people stay on 0.025% for good because it controls their acne well; others move to a stronger version after a few months if their prescriber agrees.

A gentle start plan

If your doctor is happy with a gradual introduction, a common approach is:

  • Weeks 1–2: apply every third night.
  • Weeks 3–4: apply every other night.
  • Week 5 onwards: apply every night if your skin feels comfortable.

On each application night, cleanse, let the skin dry completely, then smooth a pea-sized amount over the face. People with very sensitive skin can apply a thin layer of moisturizer first to buffer it. Avoid the eyes, lips and nostrils, and always wash your hands afterwards.

How long does it take to work?

Allow about two to three months before judging the result. A few extra spots in the early weeks are normal. By around week 12, most people notice fewer blackheads, smaller-looking pores and more even texture.

What are the side effects?

Mild dryness, pinkness, fine peeling and a brief stinging feeling are common, even at this strength. Skin burns more easily, so wear SPF 30 or above daily and avoid sunbeds. Stop and speak to a doctor if the skin blisters, crusts or swells, or if you notice a rash spreading beyond the treated area.

Who should not use Tretoin?

It should not be used during pregnancy or while trying for a baby. If breastfeeding, get medical advice first. It is not recommended for children under 12 and should not go on eczema, sunburn, cuts or rosacea. Hold off on waxing, exfoliating acids, scrubs and alcohol-based toners, and tell your prescriber if you use any other acne medicine or sun-sensitizing tablets such as doxycycline.

Pack sizes and storage

Tretoin 0.025% comes in 20 g tubes, in packs of 3, 6 or 9, from $9. Keep it below 77°F (25°C), away from direct heat.
